“Ojiisan worries we will be sent back to Japan.”
Rose scrunched her eyebrows. “Back? They can’t send us back to a place we’ve never been. Can they?”
“I don’t know what they can or cannot do.”
“But I barely know Japanese! I don’t even know which part of Japan Ojiisan came from. Or Mama.” Rose suddenly wished she’d taken more interest, asked more questions.
“Your grandfather grew up in a small fishing village called NoTo. Mama’s from a big city. Hiroshima. She still has relatives there.”
